1610: a new language of the sacred
In 1610, Monteverdi published this collection, dedicated to Pope Paul V, in the hope of attracting the attention of Rome. It was in Venice that he finally made his career, and in the meantime he had revolutionised the history of music. A work of the world, the Vespers of the Virgin explores every style and mood, from the most liturgical to the most theatrical, from the most contemplative to the most sensual. Between plainchant and new daring, prayer and sacred theatre come together. The Burgundian ensemble Les Traversées baroques, specialists in early Italian Baroque, have been performing these first Vespers in Beaune for over 10 years.
