Les Caractères / L'Histoire du Soldat

Two pieces of music based on literary works - Les Caractères by La Bruyère and the Russian tale L'Histoire du Soldat - which have in common that they illustrate characters through the instruments of the orchestra accompanied by a narrator.

The result of a meeting between Jean-Luc Girard and Bastien Barraco, the musical creation Les Caractères personifies the temperaments imagined by La Bruyère. Recognising Arrias the boaster, Giton the rich man, Gnathon the selfish gourmand, Avarice or La cour becomes a guessing game enlightened by the narrator.

Afanasiev's L'Histoire du Soldat (The Soldier's Tale), recounting "the adventures of the deserting soldier and the Devil who unerringly manages to steal his soul", was created by Igor Stravinsky and the writer Charles-Ferdinand Ramuz. Conceived as "a little travelling theatre", it gives voice in turn to the actors, the music and the narrator, or combines them to form an ensemble.

Two musical universes for an evening as visual as it is melodious!
