In Roman times, the main grape variety was Gamay, grown on pergolas. To enjoy it, the rich owners used to oxidise it. And they added some surprising ingredients! During the Middle Ages, wines such as hypocras and claret were drunk. Then, under Louis XIV, the "wine of the gods" was appreciated, a sweet wine to which fruit was added. Enjoy a tasting of these ancient wines prepared by a wine history specialist, Corinne Glain Fromont, using recipes from the period.
