Flamboyant and spectacular, the Dixit Dominus is nevertheless the work of a young Lutheran composer who was ill at ease with the Catholic liturgy of his patrons, princes of the Roman Church. They liked the psalm so much that Handel was persuaded to convert to Catholicism - which he politely declined. Less famous, the cantata Donnan che in ciel is a jewel of fervent theatricality, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and brought to incandescence by Natalie Perez and Thibault Noally's Accents.
