Beaune, capital of Burgundy wines, is world-famous for its autumn wine sales at the Hospices. The town's treasure is without doubt its Hôtel-Dieu.
Founded in 1443 by Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor to the Dukes of Burgundy, it is emblematic of the region's hospital heritage: a veritable palace for the poor, it is the most eloquent example of Burgundian Flemish art. Its polychrome roofs are famous.
The polyptych of the Last Judgement, commissioned from the painter Rogier van der Weyden, remains the jewel in the crown of the collections.
